Protesters taking streets of Barnsley over ‘bedroom tax’

Protesters against the ‘bedroom tax’ are holding a demonstration in South Yorkshire.

Rallies have already taken place in Sheffield against the cut in housing benefit for council tenants who have spare rooms.

A further protest is taking place in Barnsley on Saturday, with a march through the town centre supported by Labour MPs and the Unite trade union.

Demonstrators will gather at 10.30am in Eastgate before marching to Barnsley Town Hall for a rally, where speakers will include Dan Jarvis, MPfor Barnsley Central, and Michael Dugher, MP for Barnsley East.

An estimated 4,100 people in Barnsley could be affected by the housing benefit cut, according to research by Sheffield Hallam University.

About 6,000 people in Sheffield are also being hit.
