Protest about store changes

A SHEFFIELD city councilllor has voiced concerns about plans to alter a shop amid fears it could pave the way for the store to be turned into a supermarket.

The Star recently revealed the lease is coming to an end at family-run Williamsons Hardware on Fulwood Road, Broomhill.

Staghold, landlord of the property, has submitted a planning application to Sheffield Council to make changes to the premises.

Today Broomhill councillor and Lib Dem leader Coun Shaffaq Mohammed said: “Broomhill is known for its mix of independent stores and we don’t want our local centre to become another characterless high-street clone.”

Coun Mohammed said he thought Sainsbury’s was considering the site.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said “We don’t have any confirmed plans for Fulwood Road but it is a location that we’re interested in.”
