We may not have the warmest climate in Sheffield but this doesn’t mean people can work outdoors without consideration being given to the potential harmful effects from exposure to the sun’s rays.
There are thousands of people in this area working outside for many hours, including construction workers. Sadly however, for some, this may have a devastating impact on their health.
On average, five people a week in the UK are told they have skin cancer which can be traced back to them working outside unprotected from the sun’s rays. More than one person a week will die from work-related skin cancer in the UK.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. Nine out of 10 of all skin cancer deaths could be prevented if people controlled their exposure to solar radiation.
