Firefighters rescued one casualty from the inferno, who was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The fire was initially believed to have started in Milan’s pizza takeaway shop but it has now been established by the fire service that it broke out at a window shop next door.

The flames spread to flats above and the roof.

At the height of the blaze there were seven fire engines and a turntable ladder at the scene.

Police officers and paramedics were deployed and an air ambulance was scrambled.
