Probe into holiday death

POLICE are investigating the mystery death of a Sheffield holidaymaker in Greece, an inquest heard.

Anita Karen King, aged 41, of Upwell Street, Grimesthorpe, was found dead in her apartment at a resort on the Greek mainland on September 24.

Her body has now been flown back to South Yorkshire but the inquest was told tests are still being carried out into the cause of death.

The Rotherham inquest was told that Ms King, a civil servant, had flown out to Greece for a holiday several days before her death.

She had made friends with a number of other holidaymakers who then became concerned when she hadn’t been seen for some time. Ms King was subsequently found dead in her apartment and police launched an investigation.

Coroner Stanley Hooper said he had since received a death certificate from the Greek police but the cause of death was said to be ‘indeterminate’.

“I am informed that the police are still waiting for the results of a laboratory examination to determine the final cause of death,” he said.

“She had gone off on holiday to Greece on her own and had made friends with other British holidaymakers.

“They became concerned when she failed to appear and found her dead in her apartment.”

Christopher Copestake, of Judith Road, Aston, who said he was a long-standing friend of Ms King’s mother, told the inquest Ms King’s medical records had been sent off to Greece to help police with their inquiries.

He said she had recently had problems with her knee and a detached retina but there was no record of her suffering from heart disease or epilepsy.

“There was nothing that I can think of that would have led to her death,” he said.

PC Chris Wolstenholme said there was no reason why Ms KIng’s body should not be released to her family for the funeral. The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
