YOUTHS are suspected of being behind a blaze which caused thousands of pounds’ worth of damage to a Doncaster business premises.

Firefighters were called out to Hudson’s Yard, home to John Hudson Trailers and a number of other businesses, on Doncaster Road, Bawtry, late on Sunday night after a caravan and a number of lorry trailers were reported ablaze.

Police and fire service investigators are continuing to try to find out exactly what caused the fire.

Yesterday, boss at the firm John Hudson was dealing with the aftermath of the blaze, but stressed it would not stop the business from continuing to operate as normal, as it only affected a storage area.

Mr Hudson said he believed youths had been using a caravan on the site as a hang-out when there was no-one there.

He said: “I think that may have caught fire, and the fire then spread very quickly. They will certainly not be using it again because it has been wrecked by fire.

“It was in a storage area, so we can get on with our business.

“But I think the damage will run into thousands of pounds.”

John Hudson Trailers employs 50 people in buying and selling trailers, hiring trailers on the short or long term, and on ‘hire to buy’. It also offers breakdown assistance, spares and services, for trucks, trailers and buses.

Firefighters who fought the blaze said they were unable to tell exactly what the damaged vehicles were because they had been burned so much.

A spokesman for the service said the cause had been logged as deliberate.

Police were also called over the blaze.

A spokeswoman said officers were called at around 11.30pm at Hudsons Yard on Doncaster Road, Bawtry.

She said: “It is believed the fire started in a container that held a number of tyres. Nobody was injured.

“At this stage it is not known how the fire started and police continue to work with the fire service to determine the cause.”
