Probe after car crash at tycoon's home

A CAR ended up on its roof after smashing into the fence around the home of one of Doncaster's richest businessmen, sparking a police probe. The vehicle hurtled into the fence at DFS furniture tycoon Lord Kirkham's Cantley Hall home in a crash which police say could have killed someone.

Another car involved in the incident also left the road and flattened a bus stop sign outside the McAuley Catholic High School on Cantley Lane.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the collision between the two vehicles and want people who stopped at the scene to give statements about how the two men had been driving before it happened last Sunday evening at around 10.30pm.

It is believed a line of traffic was travelling along Cantley Lane towards Branton when a red Ford Fiesta overtook a red Honda Civic.

Police say the Fiesta pulled back to the correct lane, and the Civic tried to overtake the Fiesta, at which point both vehicles crashed on the wrong side of the road.

"It is believed that the two vehicles have travelled for some distance whilst being in contact with one another," said Pc Roger Lord, of the road policing group.

The Civic mounted the pavement to the offside and collided with a bus stop before coming to rest on the grass verge.

The Fiesta collided with the nearside kerb and then hit the metal fencing of Cantley Hall before rebounding and turning onto its roof, coming to rest in the centre of the road.

The driver of the Civic was not injured and the Fiesta driver suffered minor injuries and was treated and discharged from Doncaster Royal Infirmary. The road was closed for around an hour and a half.

Police believe several other drivers may have witnessed the collision but had left before the police arrived.

Pc Lord said: "I would urge anyone who witnessed this collision to contact the police as this is a serious incident that could have resulted in a death."
