A SOUTH YORKSHIRE MP has praised two environmental projects after they won gongs in a national award scheme.

The Dearne Valley and its Green Heart project collected accolades in the National Renaissance Waterways Awards.

The Dearne Valley collected first prize in the Recreation and Tourism category for its facilities and attractions, while the Green Heart partnership, a collaboration between local authorities and national bodies including the Environment Agency and RSPB, picked up the award for flood risk management after excelling in habitat creation, public access and flood strategies.

Green Heart was also runner-up in the Natural Environment category, for its work protecting the green spaces of the Dearne Valley. MP John Healey was joined by the leaders of Rotherham and Barnsley Councils Couns Roger Stone and Steve Houghton for a visit to RSPB Old Moor to praise the schemes.

He said: “People are fortunate to have such a great natural resource.”
