Prison officers' trek to help ex-service personnel

They will make the journey along with friends in aid of The Royal Star and Garter homes for disabled ex-service men and women.

The team will start off at the Sea Life Centre at the tip of North Bay in Scarborough and will follow the Cleveland Way via Ravenscar, Robin Hood’s Bay and into Whitby, finishing at the Endeavour Quay.

The walk is led by Prison Officer Paul Grimley, a former RAF Regiment gunner who served in the Falklands Campaign and wanted to mark the 25th anniversary this year by doing something to help ex-service men and women.

“I am very pleased to be able to do something to help ex-service comrades, particularly in this anniversary year,” said Paul.

“I was a serviceman myself in the Falklands so this year is important to us, and to do something for disabled service men and women is our way of remembering lost and injured mates.”

Three other walkers joining Paul also served in the Falklands - Dave Rowe served with Three Para, Mick Fennel was an RAF ground engineer and Taff Jenkins was a chef in the RAF.

The walkers will set off at 7.30am and intend to reach their destination by 5pm. All the funds raised will go to help support the disabled ex-service men and women cared for at The Royal Star and Garter home in Richmond.
