PC Mike Smith and PC Rebecca Worth began a search of the area around Dam Flask, Low Bradfield, after a member of the public raised concerns for the safety of a man.

Despite the darkness, PC Worth spotted the man, who was not moving, in the water and her colleague braved the freezing conditions to pull him to dry land.

The police officers gave emergency first aid until paramedics arrived to take over.

South Yorkshire Police said the man was taken to hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia, but he has since made a full recovery.

Inspector Louise Lambert said: “The joint effort and commitment of both PC Smith and PC Worth saved the man’s life and demonstrates the calibre of officers we have on the force.

“PC Smith showed tremendous courage and gallantry, by putting his own life at risk and going above and beyond his duty, to save someone else.

“I’m extremely proud of both PC Smith and PC Worth and feel honoured to work amongst such dedicated officers.”
