Praise to Royal Hallamshire

There is an awful lot of adverse publicity for the NHS so I would like to give my view of the NHS from my recent experience.

I went to the Theatre Admissions Unit for 7am last Wednesday and found this to be an extremely busy department but also very well run and efficient.

I was shown to a cubicle and was visited by a number of different staff who took my details and prepared me for my 8.30am operation.

As I was walking with a nurse to the theatre Mr Gillespie, the surgeon who was to perform my hysterectomy passed me on the corridor and said ‘hello’ and introduced himself, which I thought was very reassuring and helped to put me at my ease.

Time in the ante room passed quickly and the next thing I knew I was in recovery and waiting to go up to a ward.

I was taken to ward G2 where I found all the staff to be extremely friendly, courteous and efficient.

The rest of the day passed with the usual checks but I was able to have my husband, son and daughter visit me in the evening.

Although no-one likes to be woken at 2.20am and 5.30am hospital routine has to go on and has to be accepted.

Mr Gillespie called during his morning round and told me my operation had been very successful and without complications and that I could go home later that day.

This delighted and surprised me although I knew I was feeling better than I thought I would be, so I took my first tentative steps out of bed, had a shower and generally got used to being mobile again.

My husband came for me at 4.30pm and I left the hospital feeling hugely thankful for the care and attention I had received.

Mr Gillespie, all the doctors, staff and everyone at the hospital showed me the utmost courtesy and I have the utmost praise for everyone at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The food was good too.
