Praise for use of new powers

SHEFFIELD Council has been praised by a campaign group for using new powers to reopen post offices.

Two branches at Parkhead and Nether Green were reopened, although the Nether Green outlet at Shelley’s Deli, Oakbrook Road, is now under threat because a council subsidy is running out next year.

The council reopened the branches with powers created by the Sustainable Communities Act 2007, after protests about the closure of 15 post offices.

Steve Shaw, co-ordinator for campaign group Unlock Democracy, said: “The Sustainable Communities Act’s aim is to reverse community decline. Sheffield’s communities, together with the council, have used it to do just that.

“We congratulate Sheffield on their success and encourage people and councils everywhere to use the act to help their areas too. The successful implementation shows this legislation works.”
