A PROJECT set up to improve the appearance of empty shop units in the area of Sheffield awaiting the stalled Sevenstone retail quarter has been praised by a Government minister for providing apprenticeship opportunities.
Showcase Sheffield - which has been allocated a further £35,000 to continue for the coming year - has provided 16 apprenticeships since the scheme was set up in 2009. Eight are still working on the project and five have found full-time employment.
Work and Pensions minister Steve Webb, who met some of the apprentices on a visit to Sheffield, said: “I have been greatly impressed with how Sheffield is doing its bit to provide extra opportunities for young people.
“The Coalition believes in expanding opportunities like this for our young people.”
