Shiregreen and Brightside councillor Peter Price has shared this historic photo of 1966 World Cup winner Jack Charlton joining the Sheffield Labour Group football team for a friendly against reporters on The Star.

Jack, who passed away at the weekend, was manager of Sheffield Wednesday at the time and was friends with former MP Richard Caborn, who invited him to be a ringer on the Labour team.

Coun Price said: "We used to have an annual football match between Labour and the Press and this was a charity match at Hillsborough Arena. I can't remember the exact year but it must have been the early 1980s.

"I think we won 2-1. I used to pride myself on being able to take corners but I couldn't kick the ball high enough for Jack to head it in so he kept shouting at me."

The team included Richard Caborn, Clive Betts MP, former MEP Roger Barton, Howard Knight, Sam Wall, Dave Morgan and Dave Skinner.

Peter added: "Clive was a decent centre half, Roger was good in goal and Sam Wall was probably the best player.

"Richard, Dave Morgan, Dave Skinner, Howard Knight and me could probably hold our own in a decent local amateur team. Our best - Jimmy Jameson - isn't in the photo but he had trials with a professional club.

"It was smashing, we had tea afterwards and a few pints."

Jack came to Sheffield Wednesday in 1977 and stayed until 1983. He guided Wednesday to promotion from the Football League's Third Division in 1980 - overseeing the famous ‘Boxing Day Massacre’ win over Sheffield United.
