The move has affected almost two million people as the Government aims to tackle ‘concerning rates of infection’ in the region.

We asked you through our Facebook and Twitter pages if you were concerned about a similar situation occurring in Yorkshire and affecting Sheffield residents, and the response was overwhelming. Here is what a few of you had to say.

Robina Smith told us: “My driving test is on the 30th and my granddaughter lives in Hull. I fear that I'll be able to do and see neither before the end of the month. I told my husband months ago we'd go into lockdown on the second week of September. I seriously hope I'm wrong.”

David Booth said: “Does it matter? So many people ignored the other lockdowns and got away with it. What makes anyone think they'll obey it next time? This virus is going to last for decades if people ignore all advice and just carry on doing whatever they like.”

Said Kenny Bev: “Putting Sheffield into local lockdown after UK lockdown would kill a well-loved city after it's just started to get back on its feet.”

Lesa Clark was in a more dismissive mood. “Is it still 2020? Wake me up when it's all over!”, she said.

Adrian Finney feels lockdown is inevitable. “Local lockdown? I think it’s a question of ‘when, not if’, isn’t it? We’re nearly at the North East’s numbers already. “If we’re all sensible here we can avoid that. But given some think it’s not even real I think ‘sensible’ has gone out the window.“The Government have a lot to answer for there as their guidance has descended into a contradictory mess.”
