Mayor Jarvis met up with Tracy Brabin, the newly elected West Yorkshire mayor for the first time following her electoral success.

The Labour regional mayors said transport would be a ‘big priority’ and revealed that 35,000 people travel over the south/west Yorkshire border each day.

In a meeting that took place against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield, the mayors agreed that they would work together on the Government’s levelling up agenda, promote the visitor economy, heritage and arts alongside building stronger relationships in advanced manufacturing, engineering and green energy sectors.

Mayor Jarvis, speaking after the meet, said: “Transport is a big priority for us both, there are 35,000 people every single day, crossing back and forth over the border,” Mayor Jarvis said.

“We’re both now members of Transport for the North. So in terms of that practical difference, I think there are a couple of things we can do.

“The first is about looking at the connectivity and what can we do to improve railway connectivity.

“There are already some proposals that we’re looking at, in trying to increase the frequency of service both ways. So that’s something that we’ll be discussing in the very near future.

“We also, though, have a shared commitment to improving our bus services in both our areas.

“We’ve got a body of work in South Yorkshire and we’ll have more to say about that at the next combined authority meeting in early June, but Tracy and I both got stated manifesto commitments to improving our services and we’re also going to be thinking about how we do that together.”
