Rother Valley’s Alexander Stafford added he will seek "proper and true answers" to get to the bottom of the incident.

Mr Cummings insisted he did not break the law, after allegations in the Observer and the Sunday Mirror said he drove 260 miles from London to his hometown Durham, to visit his parents.

In a statement released yesterday, Mr Stafford said: "Let me be clear, there cannot be one rule for one and another for others.

"Many of us across Rother Valley have made huge sacrifices during this time - as have I – to protect lives. As many of you will know my wife gave birth a month ago. Following complications, she was hospitalised and due to the lockdown I could not see my newborn daughter for some time. This was harder than can be imagined, but this sacrifice was the right thing to do to protect lives.

"We don’t have all the facts, and nor should we make quick decisions based on partial information, which is why I have been and continue to seek proper and true answers to get to the bottom of what happened. To me, not only the letter of the law needs to be obeyed, but the spirit of it too.

"I will also be writing to the Prime Minister conveying the views of so many residents of Rother Valley as well as my own. I will, as usual, be responding to each and every email from constituents personally and am clearing time in my diary so that any and all constituents who want to speak to me on this issue can express their concerns.

"As I said when I was elected, I will always listen to residents, and always put Rother Valley first, but I will also always make a balanced judgement based on the evidence and the facts."
