Sheffield pupils' safety will be at risk if new apartments are built, warns school
A school is objecting to plans for a new apartment block, saying it has significant concerns for the safety of its pupils.
Norton Free Church of England Primary has joined 20 local residents in opposing plans to demolish a house and replace it with 14 apartments.
Developers want to build the three to four storey apartment block at 298 Norton Lane but there are fears the 18 parking spaces won't be enough and the extra traffic will make already busy roads more dangerous.
Daniel Thaw, chairman of the primary school's board of governors, says in an objection letter: "We have significant concerns over the safety of our pupils.
"This is due to the location of the site being adjacent to the school crossing on Norton Lane which is used by a large number of our families. Access is next to another entrance onto Norton Lane, close to a junction and very close to a bend.
"There is insufficient parking for the proposed development which may result in parking on side streets, particularly near the junction of School Lane and Norton Lane and the entrance to Oakes Park.
"As a parent who has walked their children past the existing entrance to the site for over a decade on their way to school, we have always had to watch them closely at this point.
"The entrance was a hazard and the main road was a hazard, hence the existing safety barrier, and was always a concern and a place where we had to gather the children before crossing the entrance. The increased traffic from 14 flats will make this problem much worse."
The school and residents are supported by local councillor Steve Ayris. He said: "Norton Lane is a principal bus route connecting traffic between Blackstock Road with Jordanthorpe Parkway and is already subject to road safety issues due to the volume and speed of traffic."
Edge architects, on behalf of the applicants, say the development is within easy walking distance of local amenities and several bus stops.
