Mr Betts asked local residents if they supported the creation of a new station on the old site, and if so what type of services they wished to see implemented. The consultation received 133 responses from residents of Beighton village.

The results of the survey were overwhelmingly clear: 97.7 per cent of respondents are in favour of creating a new station at Beighton on the old station site, and 85.7 per cent of respondents are also in favour of establishing of a Park and Ride there to try and get people to transfer from car to rail.

The MP said: “I am a strong advocate of creating a new tram-train station at the old Beighton station site and expanding the network through existing railway lines in that community. We must act now to avoid being left behind by other cities which have recently extended their tram systems and have plans in place for further expansion. We have to be bold and ambitious, because other cities like Manchester, Nottingham and Birmingham have overtaken us in terms of light railway development since Supertram launched 27 years ago.”

“At present, our public transport system is not where it needs to be- it’s not fit for the 21st century. We also ought to be looking actively at how we expand our tram network. This would help to encourage people to move from cars on to greener forms of public transport.”

The survey also found that the majority of people want to see a tram-train that runs into Sheffield City Centre running from a newly created Beighton station, like the one that now runs from Sheffield to Rotherham, with 65.4per cent of respondents being in favour.

Following the results, Mr Betts wrote a letter to the Sheffield City Region Officer for Transport, and Sheffield City Council, to outline his support for the creation of a new tram-train station at the old Beighton station site.Sheffield MP hails the Star's FreeBee bus campaign and calls for 'really detailed look' into bringing it back
