SHEFFIELD CENTRAL: Residents reveal who they plan to vote for in this year's general election as the battle for Number 10 enters final week

Voters in Sheffield Central have historically voted Labour by a significant margin, making it one of the party's safer seats - except in 2010 when the Liberal Democrats nearly took it.

But this time round sees eight different candidates contesting the seat - the most of any Sheffield constituency in this general election.

With one week left to polling day, how are folk feeling?

Michael Burke, a Sheffield Central resident, said: “I’m voting Labour because I think they’re going to do something for us. That buffoon Boris Johnson only cares for the rich and not working class people and I think the working class people should be thought about more and politicians should do more for them. I don’t do a lot of voting but I’m voting for Jeremy Corbyn this time and I hope he wins.

"I’ll be honest, I voted out of the European Union in the referendum but I wish I’d voted the other way now. Having said that, let’s see what happens. I’m scared about it, the last three years if you look at the news it’s all Brexit. If they’re going to leave they should have done it by now."

The constituency also has the youngest average voters of anywhere in the city, partly due to its large student population and pundits across the country have predicted that young people could determin this election.

Luke Peat, a 23-year-old from Walkley, said: "I'm planning to vote Labour as it stands.

"The issue that I'm most interested in is the NHS as I feel like over the last decade it has been starved of funds and generally mis-treated by the Tory government. I have relied on the NHS various times throughout my life and realise what a valuable service it is. Labour's proposal to increase the NHS budget by four percent is an appealing one and is much needed.

"I also agree with Labour's plans for taxation. The idea to tax those who earn over 80,000 a year I feel like is a good one, it means extra money is funneled into underfunded public services and the difference in take home pay will be negligible for those impacted. I feel like the conservative government has looked after the top five percent way too much in terms of taxation. These are the main reasons why I'm voting Labour next week.

"Corbyn also is just a much more likeable persons than Johnson, who has said some disgusting homophobic and racist comments in the past."

But not all were sure they were going to vote next week. Milly Cockbill, a student living in Sheffield Central during term time, said she is feeling disaffected by politics and left confused with how to get her vote in.

"I’m not planning to vote in the general election because I don’t agree with any of the parties. A lot of the things they’re all putting forward are contradicting each other and a lot of it is probably not true.

"The NHS is an important issue but it’s been made really hard to vote when you’re living at uni and away from home. The university has been trying to get people to register but not actually helping with how to get things sorted."
