Residents object to plans to turn Sheffield Post Office into flats

Residents have objected to plans to demolish a post office for flats on a busy street, saying it will make parking problems worse.

Developers want to demolish the post office on 509 Pitsmoor Road, Kelham Island, and build six two-bed flats and three one bed flats in its place.

If approved, the new site could house around 15 people but developers have not created space for parking - meaning they would need to leave vehicles on surrounding street.

But those currently living on the street say parking is already a problem and worry this new development would "cause chaos and so much upheaval."

One resident who lives on the nearby Shirecliffe Close said: "I think this will be bad for parking issues on near by streets. It does not fit in with the design and features of neighboring buildings.

"It will cause disruption whilst building to a busy road and noise. It looks like it would be an eye sore."

Another said: "As a resident I am very disappointed to have lost our only local post office, which was such an important amenity.

"The proposition to turn the post office into flats is very short sighted. The area for one is not lacking in apartments with Kelham Island and the nearby Riverside area having many apartment blocks.

"The application makes no mention of parking facilities, so I would assume new resident would be parking cars in nearby streets, having a huge negative impact on all surrounding streets.”

The deadline to comment is February 25.
