Exclusive:Sheffield Reform UK councillor Nathaniel Menday suspended after 'subhuman underclass' social media posts exposed

Nathaniel Menday was elected less than a week ago

Reform UK have said that a Sheffield councillor has brought the party ‘into disrepute’ after deleted social media posts in which he says the UK has a ‘subhuman underclass’ were shared by The Star.

On a now deleted X account - formerly Twitter - councillor Nathaniel Menday shared pictures of swastikas, Adolf Hitler’s book Mein Kampf and other far right iconography like the Sonnenrad, or ‘sun wheel’.

The Star uncovered these posts through the Wayback Machine, including one where he described people in the UK as being ‘fatter, uglier and poorly dressed’ when compared to those in continental Europe.

“On top of this we have a disgusting, almost subhuman underclass of people bringing the place down,” he wrote in a deleted post.

Mr Menday was elected to represent the Woodhouse ward in last week’s local election, however only five days after the results were announced has been suspended from his party.

Reform UK contacted The Star just before 5pm on Wednesday (May 13) to share the news, the same day these posts were publicised in the paper.

A Reform UK spokesman said: “Councillor Menday has been suspended from Reform UK pending investigation after he failed to declare social media posts which have brought the party into disrepute.

“Reform UK does not support such comments.”

Representatives in Sheffield City Council have been calling for Mr Menday’s resignation throughout the day, with Minesh Parekh, Labour councillor for Crookes and Crosspool, said he had called for Sheffield City Council's standards committee to ‘take appropriate action’.

“He is clearly unfit for public office and should do the decent thing and resign,” he told The Star.

“That he was able to be elected as a Reform UK councillor shows their vetting processes to be an absolute joke - and raises concerns about how many racists or fascists they have snuck into office last week.”

Before he was elected, The Times revealed that Mr Menday had previously called Nazi architects ‘real visionaries’.

HOPE not Hate also said that Mr Menday blamed Jewish people for antisemitism as they ‘overwhelmingly favour open borders’.

During the campaign he apologised for his remarks, while Reform’s deputy leader, Richard Tice, said that Mr Menday would be assessed if he was elected and ‘decisions will be made’.

The Liberal Democrats in Sheffield called for Mr Menday to be suspended when he was a candidate, and reaffirmed their stance earlier today.

Coun Martin Smith, leader of the Liberal Democrat group at Sheffield City Council, added: “These further revelations about Reform's Woodhouse councillor are deeply disturbing.

“Promoting white supremacist symbols, describing others as ‘a subhuman underclass’ and blaming Jewish people for antisemitism are the hallmarks of far-right extremism.”
