Sunshine Homes has applied to demolish the building, which was previously a cinema, theatre, and bingo hall, and build a four storey block to house 45 apartments and three commercial units on the ground floor.

Planning documents state that the developers did explore the option of converting the existing building, but this was not a “viableproposition”.

Developers say the scheme would create “much needed, high quality” homes, boost the economy, reinvigorate a “high street falling into decline”, and compliment the Forge Island development, which is undergoing construction nearby.
