Plans revealed to convert well-known Sheffield kitchen and bathroom store into pub

Plans have been submitted to change JA Horne Starlight fitted kitchens and bathrooms on Abbeydale Road into a bar.

The shop, which was established in 1971, has been sold to a private business with a view to converting it

A planning application says: “The area of Abbeydale Road offers a mixture of retail and leisure outlets and has over recent years become a vibrant artery of the city.

“The works proposed are a full change of use to a drinking establishment with a catering kitchen, cellar and staff facilities.

“One of the major requirements is for a covered external area using the site’s hardstanding to the back of the pavement. This will have a metal frame supporting a glass roof

“Given the impact of Covid on the hospitality industry, the potential for ongoing restrictions is highly likely and the external area would provide for continuation of business.”

Developers say the building has been altered over the years, including a substantial remodeling with internal walls removed to form an open sales area.

The application adds: “The building has been neglected for some time and fallen into disrepair. The proposed works would enhance the streetscape and provide employment in the area.

“Due to the pandemic, the requirement to provide well ventilated seating is vital to allow the business to operate. When the current restrictions are eased, the proposal can be implemented and would allow the business to open.

“The applicant is looking to invest in a rundown property to allow it to flourish and improve the streetscape.

“The challenges facing the hospitality industry from the pandemic have made the operation of drinking premises a difficult business.

“It is hoped that with the proposed works can become part of the vibrant local area and provide for the community when it can do so.”

The new bar would open until 11.30pm and the owners have produced a noise assessment report with a number of measures to stop local residents from being disturbed.
