The publication of the Carlton Masterplan Framework revealed that dwellings will be built on sites between Fish Dam Lane and Carlton Road, and Shaw Lane.

It would see around 2,000 new homes, 210 more spaces at Carlton Primary School and a new shop.

Councillor Sharon Howard urged members of the public to take part in the consultation to have their say on the site, which will be held online, during a cabinet meeting earlier this month.

An online petition has gained almost 500 signatures to stop the development, stating that it would serve “no tangible benefit to our community”, and would have a “detrimental impact to both physical and mental health of the existing community.”

Protesters are concerned that wildlife will be displaced from the nearby Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve, part of the Dearne Valley Wetlands which has been notified as a site of special scientific interest by Natural England.

Barnsley Council say the plan will “deliver a sustainable new community, focused around Wharncliffe Woodmoor as the key greenspace.

The consultation website states: “It will provide high-quality housing within a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly environment and be linked to the surrounding outdoor spaces such as Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve and the National Cycle Network.

“The site also provides renewable energy opportunities, which are being explored. The proposals also include land for business expansion, in an area where local businesses are currently thriving.”
