Liberal Democrat campaigner Rebecca Atkinson questioned the council on the issues during a recent full council meeting.

She said a number of extra bins were promised for the Bolehills several weeks ago but had not materialised meanwhile, others across the city were “full and overflowing”.

“It was of course because of the good weather but also because people discovered the outdoors and they are enjoying it. I don’t think it’s a trend that is going to reverse any time soon.

“In the North West of the city, residents complained of littering due to bin shortages in Rivelin Valley, Crookes Valley Park and the Bolehills.

“A lot of the material being put in the bins this weekend consisted of cardboard, aluminium cans and glass bottles. These are valuable materials that are widely and easily recycled.”

She said residents told her they wanted more bins, more regular collections and segregated bins for recycling.

Ms Atkinson added: “From my perspective, it is the council’s job to make it easy for people to do the right thing and I think just a few more things in place can make a massive difference to people and keep our parks clean and tidy.”

Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for parks, said the extra bins had not arrived yet but were due imminently.

She added: “We saw a big increase in the number of visitors to parks over the past year which required a significant amount of management alongside our standard health and safety work, regular maintenance and the necessity to maintain a Covid-safe working environment for our staff.

“We therefore implemented different litter options in parks across the city, often working with our partners to respond to the changing needs.

“Over the past year we fitted 20 permanent litter bins with a further 10 bins planned for the West of the city and 15 large temporary bins were also added.

“Additional weekend staffing was also put in place to increase litter collections.”

She said further measures were planned ahead of this summer and that they would look at what it could do to improve recycling.
