“On Saturday we will celebrate our vibrant multi-racial communities that contribute so much to our region”

More than 50 South Yorkshire organisations are backing a demonstration against racism and the far right in Sheffield.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the Unity March through the city centre on Saturday, October 24.

Organiser Sheffield Stand Up to Racism said it was in response to a recent march by right-wing group Patriot Platform through Darnall.

A spokesperson said: “On Saturday we will celebrate our vibrant multi-racial communities that contribute so much to our region. We reject the far right narrative of hate and division.”

A poster states it is supported trade unions, campaigns, political parties and organisations including the NHS, TUC, Unite, Sheffield Labour and the Green Party.

Protesters will assemble at Devonshire Green at 11.30am and march through the city centre, ending in Barkers Pool.

A rally featuring speakers and music will take place on the City Hall steps.

The spokesperson added: “The Unity demonstration will show that far right groups using anti-immigration rhetoric to attempt to build a street army of thugs do not represent Sheffield and South Yorkshire.

“In recent weeks, the so-called Patriot Platform has appeared in Sheffield and Doncaster, where Stand Up to Racism has co-organised successful counter demonstrations.

“We have also witnessed the incursion into Darnall, a very diverse area of Sheffield, by a large number of black-clad individuals, some wearing balaclavas and others with their faces covered in camouflage paint.

“This is designed to intimidate. It means our Unity demonstration takes on an even greater significance.”
