Southey councillor Jayne Dunn has just returned from a fortnight’s holiday to the remote island of Koh Samui near Thailand.

Thailand has 43 cases of Coronavirus so Coun Dunn knew she needed to take precautions.

She said: “I have been quite poorly but I checked with the hospital and insurance company before I left and they both said I could go. If I had cancelled, I would have lost all my money.

“I own a beauty salon so I took plenty of latex gloves, the travel agent gave me some masks and I got some more at the hotel when I arrived. I also took hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes.”

When Coun Dunn arrived at Bangkok airport she said 80 per cent of people wore masks.

“When I was at the airport I wore a mask and kept myself to myself. I had latex gloves on the whole time and if I went to the bathroom, I washed my hands, used hand sanitiser and put a new pair of gloves on.

“Security and customs officers wore masks and I even saw one woman in a fake Mulberry one which matched her outfit.

“It was strange because you couldn’t see people’s faces. Every time someone touched your passport they cleansed their hands and when we got on the plane, which was Bangkok Airways, the air stewards were wearing masks.

“It was surreal, like something out of a film, and although I wore the mask, I think the best thing I did was take gloves with me.

“When I arrived at my hotel in Bangkok it was immaculate but I wiped the surfaces with antibacterial wipes.

“While I was on the island I didn’t see anyone with masks on but there were high levels of hygiene and you were asked to use antibacterial gel before you went to the buffet.”

Coun Dunn said because she took every precaution she wasn’t overly concerned about the virus.
