A petition with around 700 signatures calling to save Tinsley Carnegie Library, which is more than 100 years old, was raised at a full council meeting.

A speaker due to present the petition was unable to attend the meeting but questions about if it was a listed building and what are the issues preventing use by the council were put to the council.

Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure, said: “Anyone can apply to Historic England to have a building listed then the decision is made by them and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport – the council does not have a part in that decision making.

“The library building is being considered for disposal however there are a lot of complex, legal issues surrounding it so we are looking at that from a legal perspective and trying to understand the very complex set of technicalities.

“The property needs a considerable amount of investment in order to bring it back into use and the council does not have a budget for undertaking that work. But if a group thinks it can find the finances to do that then we would obviously look at that.

“The building is in a very, very poor state. We don’t have the figures on that but, again, we do not have the budget to bring that building back into use.”
