Here’s the lowdown on what to expect in 2020.
5. A referendum
A 26,000-name petition has sparked a referendum, which is due to be held on or before the day of the next local elections on May 7, 2020. It’s Our City campaigners want to see the ruling Cabinet scrapped and replaced with a committee system, which they believe is more democratic. The council will now have a Big Conversation to look at how a committee system could work. Photo: Lucy Ashton
6. Children with special needs
The council recently held a consultation on special educational needs and disabilities after an inspection last November found seven areas of significant weakness. Parents and support groups have also highlighted a number of problems. The council is now working on a strategy which will improve services for SEND children over the next five years. Shops, cinemas and venues involved in the sex industry need to be licensed and the council is asking people for their views.
