The Hairband, on Ecclesall Road, was granted the license by Sheffield Council's licensing committee today.

Representing Wayne Cade, director of the company, Stuart Gibson said it was not a backstreet to becoming a pub and they wanted to introduce a complimentary drink to 'move with the times' and boost business.

He added: "We’ve got something going here. The fact they’ve been running for 40 years tells me they’re doing something right and they’re well respected in Sheffield.

"You'd get a glass of wine, for example, and that will be it so the idea someone would come in and drink and drink is not going to happen - the business wouldn’t survive. It's like going into a salon and getting a coffee and that is your lot."

There was one objection from a local residents' group who were concerned about nuisance.

But Mr Cade reassured the committee it would be kept under control, customers would not be drinking outside and staff would be given appropriate training.

Councillor Andy Bainbridge, chair of the committee, said: "We've listened to the arguments on both sides and we feel that we are satisfied that the business has considered any possible repercussions from the decision to grant the license and you will deal with any problems that may arise.”

"So there are no grounds upon which we could refuse but it will be checked and if any breaches are made, you will be brought before the committee."
