Road narrowing, improved bus stops and new cycle lanes planned for Doncaster town centre
Senior councillors are set to rubber-stamp a new set of proposals to improve cycling and highways infrastructure across Doncaster town centre.
Doncaster Council will carry out new dedicated cycle lanes, improvements to the public areas, highway enhancements including single carriageways, road narrowing, better bus stops with real time information points and works undertaken to enable improved digital infrastructure.
Benefitting from Sheffield City Region cash, the planned project is an extension of the Quality Streets scheme which made major improvements to Hall Gate and Silver Street.
The new plans wiIl aim for similar enhancements at Wood Street, Cleveland Street, Duke Street and St Sepulchre Gate.
The new infrastructure will aim to create a better environment for pedestrians and cyclists and help to ‘interconnect and unlock the potential of key sites’ in Doncaster town centre.
Subject to securing the funding, works would start in the summer with the project expected to be completed in spring 2023.
Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “We have ambitious plans for Doncaster town centre and the whole borough which have seen a remarkable rejuvenation in recent years, but we can and we will do more.
“This Quality Streets – Active Travel scheme will improve connections and the look and feel of our urban centre from the Civic and Cultural Quarter in Waterdale through to our superb new train station forecourt development.
“The enhancements will create space for our residents to feel safe from vehicles and enrich the overall experience for visitors and users of the town centre. It will create a friendlier built environment and will encourage more people to visit, stay longer and return with greater frequency. It will also play its part in making Doncaster a location of choice for businesses.
“It’s one of the many schemes we have already delivered and plan to roll out to continue our ongoing improvement journey across the borough of Doncaster. We are committed to making Doncaster a better place for all.”
