The centres at Goldthorpe, Penistone, Smithies and Worsbrough reopened on May 6 after being closed due to coronavirus, and only accepted essential waste initially.

However, visitors can now bring cardboard, DIY waste such as timber, rubble and scrap metal, alongside excess ‘grey bin’ waste and garden waste. The centres still cannot yet accept plastics, plasterboard, furniture, white goods or electronics.

Restrictions on the number of vehicles allowed into the centres at any one time is still in place and the council is urging residents to only visit household waste recycling centres if they really need to.

Long queues are expected at all the sites and anyone attending should expect delays. Traffic management remains in place to control queues outside the sites.

Social distancing rules are still in place, and visitors must only bring waste they can carry, as staff cannot help dispose of waste, and only one person is permitted per vehicle.

Councillor Chris Lamb, Barnsley Council cabinet spokesman for place (environment and transportation), said: “I would like to thank the people of Barnsley who in the majority of cases have been responsible in coming to use our recycling centres.

“We’ve now been able to move to the next phase. If this works well in the coming weeks, and people deposit their cardboard and DIY waste safely while keeping social distance, and without queues getting too long, we’ll look to remove yet more restrictions on what people can bring and hopefully get the sites back to full capacity.”
