Sheffield Council and its contractors Amey and Veolia have worked around the clock to clear more than four tonnes of waste per day from Endcliffe Park and the Porter Valley.

Local residents complained after hundreds of people visited the park during last week's hot weather and left mounds of rubbish.

Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, Liberal Democrat group leader, joined residents on a litter pick and said there had also been complaints about anti social behaviour.

He said: “I had a lot of emails from residents very concerned about what was going off, in terms of the volume of people, the state of the park once they had left and loud music being played into the night.

“The music was coming from cars going into the car park late in the evening and opening the doors and boots and blaring out music.

“The plan now is to close the gates to the car park at 4pm and police will be there checking.

“The police, local councillors and council officers are also meeting there this evening at 9pm to check everything."

The council has put in extra bins at Endcliffe park and they are being collected up to three times a day.

Coun Mohammed said: “I've also asked for some large steel bins, such as the ones you get for commercial waste, but really the best thing people can do is to take their own waste home.

“This would minimise the impact on the park but also means you can sort it into your individual recycling bins so it helps the environment in that way as well.

“I would also ask people not to bring disposable bbqs as they scorch the grass and can be a fire hazard.

“Things did calm down over the weekend as the weather wasn't as hot and sunny and I hope it will settle down once Ecclesall Road and West Street reopen and people can meet for a drink there.”
