A developer is hoping to convert the Old School Medical Centre, at the junction of School Lane and Greenfield Road in Greenhill Conservation Area.

Donovan Property Investments says the former school has been altered over the years and the former medical practice has closed and relocated to Jordanthorpe.

It wants to convert the existing building into five townhouses and erect another two homes on the site.

However, seven residents living on School Road have objected.

One said: "From a historical point of view, the old school does not consist only of the building itself, but also of the children's playground.

"A space like this can bear as much witness to the past as can stones and mortar.

“The playground encompasses the memory of all the pupils in the Greenhill area who have played there since the old school was built in 1843. Many people living in the Greenhill area today were pupils there.

“I am sure the playground area could be redesigned in a more environmentally friendly way which would enhance the whole site and leave it visible to be enjoyed by those of us who live around and those who pass by.”

Other residents are worried about their homes being overshadowed and parking.

One said: “These roads are already used for parking by residents and I am very concerned that due to the width of the roads, the pavements will be blocked by parked cars to allow moving cars to pass.”
