If approved by Sheffield Council, the 1,900 sqm shop will be built at on Rotherham Road, in Handsworth.

The existing buildings on the site would be demolished to make way for the development, which includes parking for 106 vehicles – including nine parent and toddler spaces and six disabled spaces.

In a statement provided with the plans, Urbana Town Planning, on behalf of Ackroyd and Abbott, said: “The site is in a relatively built-up area and is bordered by residential as well as some industrial uses.

“Given the location of the site it has a large catchment area and also good accessibility to a large amount of people.”

It adds: “It is considered the proposed design complements the variety of built forms and materials in the surrounding area and is typical of retail units of this type.

“The proposal also maintains a strip of ‘open space’ to the Rotherham Road frontage that will maintain the amenity of the dwellings across the road and will provide an opportunity for high quality landscaping.

“Additional supporting reports also demonstrate the acceptability of the proposals from the perspective of ecology, highways, air quality and acoustics and therefore, given the above discussion and policy analysis, it is considered the proposals are acceptable, comply with all local and national policy, and therefore should be approved without delay.”

So far there have been four comments received from the public, three of which were from those living on the road and objected.

Concerns raised included pollution, noise and traffic.
