Plans for 200 post graduate apartments between Sheffield pub and church
Sheffield Council has approved many different student accommodation blocks across the city centre in recent years with some concerns there were too many or not enough of the right type.
The Crosslane Group – a specialist in student accommodation – now wants to build a brand new 12-storey block of 221 beds on Fitzwilliam Street, in between The Washington Pub and the Christ Church Central.

"This scheme has been developed to take account of both the future aspirations and the historical context of the area to create a proposal fitting of the area.
"The application follows detailed discussions with Sheffield Council's planning department and represents a response developed as a collaborative process between all parties and of which is of an appropriate design, scale and mass to the present and future contexts."
The site has seen a number of changes over the years. In the first half of the 19th century the land belonged to Earl William FitzWilliam and as it developed the area was characterised by Victorian terraced houses and warehouses. But it was heavily bombed during World War Two and, as a result, was largely cleared and remained undeveloped until the 1980s.

If approved by the council, the new development would be a mix of studio and twodio apartments with no car parking.
Cartwright Pickard said: "The proposal looks to redevelop a redundant site located close to the city centre and major transport routes.
“The site’s city centre proximity and zero car parking strategy will encourage all building users to use low carbon forms of transport. This will be encouraged further through the installation of secure cycle parking.”
