Parents and teachers have launched a petition against plans to build a new nursery next to a primary school, warning it will worsen already dangerous traffic.

Cleo Metcalf, a parent and governor at Intake Primary School, on Cadman Road, started the petition which has so far gathered nearly 200 signatures.

She said: "Myself, school staff, parents and local residents are all extremely concerned about this on a number of levels, not limited to pollution, traffic congestion and health and safety of pedestrians."

If approved, it will accommodate around 62 children aged between six and eight, looked after by 14 members of staff. It would be open from 7.30am to 6.30pm weekdays.

The proposals include an indoor play area, kitchen, office space, toilets, a staff room, an outdoor play area and five car parking spaces.

So far, there has been 31 written objections, almost all of which raised concerns about traffic.

Lisa Reid, head teacher, said: "Parking around the school is dangerous - it's an accident waiting to happen.

"We have no objections to the nursery, it's just the access and this would make it more dangerous."

She said they had some near misses around the area and were already fighting to get better enforcement and red lines in place.

Councillor Mike Drabble, representative for Richmond ward, was supporting them with this. He said he was very impressed with the school for how they were handling it and that the initial drive for better safety came from pupils.

He added: "It's a tough one but we're just doing what we can and supporting them.

"If the nursery goes ahead it will add a lot of traffic to an already bad situation when it's at its worst."

Intake Primary has also submitted an objection, saying the extra traffic will add to an already chaotic situation.

It said: “These times clash with schools making an already difficult parking situation on Cadman Road even worse.
