Park playgrounds in deprived areas of Sheffield to get improvements

Park playgrounds in four deprived areas of Sheffield are set to receive upgrades.

Play equipment will be upgraded and safety and accessibility improved. The plan was approved yesterday (April 13) by Sheffield City Council’s finance and performance policy committee.

A report to the committee said: “This project will invest public health funding to improve four playgrounds located in areas of high deprivation, with the aim of reducing health inequalities among children.

“Targeting investment in deprived communities ensures resources are directed where they are most needed, helping to address long-standing inequalities in children’s health outcomes.” It added: “Improving local play environments supports children’s physical and mental wellbeing, helps build healthy habits from an early age and provides free, accessible opportunities for exercise.”

Survey

Work should be completed by October.

Mather Road Recreation Ground in Darnall is to benefit from a multi-use games area (MUGA). Councillors agreed a budget of £159,100 for the project.

MUGAs are able to offer year-round sports facilities in parks. A community survey in 2023 showed that popular ideas include improving the football and cricket pitches.

A report to the committee said that new sports facilities would hlp to increase physical activity and sport participation levels within under-represented groups. The proposals will involve talking to local groups and youth organisations, optimising school and community usage. They will also enhance the quality of a local green space.
