The £16.5m Skye Edge development is on the boundary of Norfolk Park and the Manor and is visible from miles around.

The site, which has been empty since 2005, will be transformed with 113 new homes, including 69 three-bedroomed and 44 four bedroomed town houses.

Placefirst agreed to abandon the gated areas and councillors overwhelmingly backed the scheme in early 2019.

The developer aims to offer an alternative to home ownership and designs, builds, maintains and manages the homes for families who don’t want a mortgage.

David Mawson, chief executive for Placefirst, said: “Offering arguably the best views in Sheffield, this is a major landmark development for us and one which we feel will be embraced by families seeking quality built homes and superb commuter routes into the city centre.

“As a developer, our long-term vision for Skye Edge is to create a vibrant, thriving community which complements and enhances the surrounding area.

“Expensive house prices can be out of reach for many hard-working families.

"We therefore believe that renting can be a long-term alternative to buying a house and feel this development will appeal to those wanting the security of moving to a new home for the rest of their life – without the financial pressure of being saddled with a mortgage.
