The five storey high Radisson hotel with 154 bedrooms will nestle behind the Victorian facades of City Mews and Palatine Chambers on Pinstone Street, while the 1970s Barkers Pool House on Burgess Street will be redeveloped.

The entrance to the hotel, plus a new shop and restaurant, will be created on Pinstone Street. The ground floor of the hotel will contain the lobby and conference rooms and there will be a paved courtyard at the rear with seating.

The upper floors will accommodate the hotel bedrooms and there will also be a restaurant/bar with terrace at the top level overlooking the Peace Gardens.

The William Mitchell frieze, the abstract stone artwork which runs along Barkers Pool House, was temporarily removed and has been stored for safekeeping. The aim is to reinstate it in a new location within Heart of the City 2.

Planning officers say in a report: “This will retain and enhance the historic facades, provide a contemporary and more sympathetic roofscape to Pinstone Street and replace Barkers Pool House with a more sympathetic design.

“It will deliver a four star hotel in a prominent and prestigious location which will contribute significantly to the regeneration of the city centre.”

Councillors are being advised to approve the plans at a meeting on Tuesday, November 17.
