If approved by Barnsley Council, the development would be built on Lundhill Road where Wombwell High School was, which closed in 2012.

Part of the plans include building on top of sports pitches and making space for a new primary school.

The new homes would be a mix of two, three and four bed, some of which will be bungalows and a total of five percent will be affordable.

Planning officers recommended councillors approve the plans. But over three rounds of consultation 130 people wrote in, many objecting because of traffic concerns and upset about the loss of sports pitches. Although during this phase some planning changes were made to address issues.

Sport England also objected but said they would withdraw this if developers agree to fund improvements to recreational facilities.

Councillors are due to make a decision on the plans this week.
