A Barnsley Council spokesperson said: “It’s clear from the news about Odeon yesterday and Cineworld at the weekend that the cinema industry is going through a difficult period.

"However, as far as the council is concerned, Cineworld is still on track to open in Barnsley later next year.”

The centre is already 60 per cent let.

Shops such as TK Maxx, Deichmann Next, Sports Direct, and Nando’s already signing up to let retail space.

When complete, the Glass Works will feature 25 new shops, seven restaurants, bowling alley, laser quest, soft play centre, and a 13 screen Cineworld cinema featuring a 4DX screen, all centred around a public courtyard.
