Long-standing Sheffield Chinese restaurant could be converted into apartments

The Canton Orchard, a Chinese restaurant on Fulwood Road, Ranmoor, is a distinctive three-storey building.

It opened in 1988 and there have been previous plans to convert it, but Coda Planning has now come forward with a new scheme to erect a three-storey extension and create three, two-bedroom apartments.

The site also contains a smaller structure, currently used to accommodate restaurant employees, which would be kept as a house

In a planning application seeking permission for the development from Sheffield Council, Coda says: “The site is situated in the centre of the Ranmoor Conservation Area, about 70 metres from the Grade II*-listed St John’s Church and Grade II-listed Ranmoor War Memorial.

"As such, it is of great importance that the proposed development does not cause harm to the significance of these heritage assets."

Coda says there will be minor alterations to the existing building and the extension will be minimal in scale and largely screened by mature trees.

The apartments would be aimed at young professionals.

Coda says: “The proposal retains the restaurant’s core appearance and its unique contribution to the conservation area.

“The underutilised restaurant presents a viable sustainable development opportunity to add to an existing residential area.

“It will respect the character of the local neighbourhood, being a sympathetic and well-designed development, which will be a positive addition to the immediate area.”

Planning officers are considering the application.
