Garden waste collections are set to resume across Barnsley

Residents can put their green bin out as normal on their next scheduled collection day.

The collection of green waste was suspended in March, in order for the local authority to divert crews to higher priority bins, following the nationwide coronavirus outbreak.

The council has apologised to residents for the disruption to the services, adding that the pandemic affected staffing levels ‘significantly’, while crews have had to adapt the way they work to make sure services are safe for staff and residents.

A team effort including staff returning to work, staff redeployed from other areas of the council and some new staff will be working together on green bin collections from June 9.

Coun Chris Lamb, cabinet spokesperson for place (environment and transportation) said: “Covid-19 continues to present enormous challenges for us all, and among them is our ability to collect all Barnsley’s bins safely.

“We’ve continued to receive feedback from the public throughout this period that they’d like us to restart green bins, and we’ve been working hard to organise this.

“I’m delighted we’re now able to resume this service and I’d like to warmly thank all the staff who have been working hard to maintain services as fully as possible throughout this incredibly difficult period and I’d also thank the people of Barnsley who been extremely patient.”
