Lodge Moor Island Residents Association and nine local residents had objected to plans to demolish the garage at 461 Redmires Road and replace it with a house.

Developer Roy Hanson told the planning board: “This is a brilliant opportunity for a family to have a home in an area that benefits from the countryside and all the amenities.”

But neighbouring residents said the new property would be out of keeping with the estate which was built in the 1920s and 30s and were also concerned about parking and road safety.

Councillors were divided. Coun Peter Price said: “This is an overdevelopment squeezed in and an overuse of that land.”

Coun Andrew Sangar agreed: “This is a different style and would be too much on the site.”

The planning board voted six in favour, four against and one abstention.
