The council is once again offering all day free parking on Sundays in its pay and display sites.

Officers say it is ‘a gesture of goodwill’ to support traders and tourism in the city centre.

The offer was switched from midweek evenings a couple of years ago after businesses said it would be more helpful to have it on Sundays.

In a report, officers say: “The loss of parking income could be up to £40,000 and there is a minor cost in publicising the offer, such as applying information stickers to the city centre pay and display machines and putting up notices in the car parks.

“It is important to note that the pay and display car parks within the city’s parks are not included in this offer.

“Parking charges don’t apply on Sundays in council pay and display locations outside of the city centre, so there are no changes to consider.”

The council will also be supporting a basic day-time bus service on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and says these services would not operate on these days without its support.
