Former chip shop to be demolished to make way for Barnsley town centre regeneration plans

At a meeting on June 10, Barnsley Council’s ruling cabinet will be asked to approve the demolition of the former Waldon’s Chip Shop, to make way for the widening of the junction with Eldon Street, so traffic exiting Midland Street, including construction vehicles working on The Glass Works, can safely turn left onto Eldon Street.

If approved, the temporary arrangement where traffic has to pass through Regent Street South will end.

When The Glass Works scheme is complete, vehicles delivering to the new bowling alley and restaurants will be able to use Midland Street to access the site, without having to pass through The Glass Works square.

During and after the demolition of the former chip shop, which will be carried out by Henry Boot, the site will be temporarily boarded off to ensure public safety. The work will be scheduled to minimise disruption to businesses and the public.

A double arched window discovered inside the chip shop will be salvaged from the structure and stored, to be reused in the future.

Plans for Eldon Street’s upgrade also include the creation of a permanent gateway feature on the site – which is set to include new public art.

Coun Tim Cheetham,council cabinet spokesman for place, said: “The work taking place in the town centre looks fantastic – our high street is looking better than ever and we’re all excited for the completion of The Glass Works next year.

“It’s important Eldon Street looks just as good when people arrive into town via the Interchange.

“We have lots of exciting plans for the area and the initial work taking place this autumn will allow those plans to progress.”

“While the demolition of the former chip shop clearly has practical benefits that will help service the Superbowl site in The Glass Works, our plans mean Eldon Street will look fantastic aesthetically, which can only be a positive for the new environment we’re striving to create in the town centre.”
