The event, which usually fills the streets of Barnsley town centre, is going virtual due to coronavirus restrictions.

More than 50 video entries from residents will be broadcast as a special one-off film on Barnsley Council’s social media channels at 1pm on Saturday July 11.

Mayor Coun Pauline Markham said: “The Mayor’s Parade is always about celebrating the best of Barnsley and this year will be no different as we move online.

“At this unique and challenging time this is a brilliant way for everyone to show their creativity at home and I can’t wait to see this year’s online entries.”

The parade will be broadcast as part of Barnsley’s Big Weekend online.

Last year’s inaugural event attracted thousands of people to the town centre – but with coronavirus restrictions still in place, this year’s celebration will take place on Barnsley Council’s Facebook channels.

The event will kick off at 10am on Saturday July 11 with family Zumba – part of Dancing Town, which will return next summer.

At 11am, the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Pauline Markham, will read ‘Luna Loves Library Day’ as Barnsley celebrates the first birthday of Library @ the Lightbox.
