Council provides update on target for 1,000 council homes by summer 2027

The target was created in 2018.

A new report provides an update on Rotherham Council’s target to have 1,000 new council homes by summer 2027.

The Housing Delivery Programme (HDP) commenced in 2018, with a target of delivering 1,000 new homes by summer 2027 through building and acquisition.

The Council Homes Housing Delivery Programme update report shows that by the end of May, 2026, a total of 808 council homes had been delivered, including 114 homes in the 2025/26 financial year.

So far 670 are council homes to rent, and 138 are shared ownership homes.

To achieve this housing target, the council has built new homes on council-owned sites, acquired homes from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and developers, and through buying homes in the open market.

The report details a number of projects in the new-build pipeline, including the conversion of Hurley Croft Neighbourhood Centre in Brampton Bierlow into residential accommodation and 38 new homes across sites in Wath and at Tenter Street in Thornhill.

4,800 households are registered for council housing and actively bidding on properties.

The report states that the council’s capacity to respond to the demand has been reduced by the Right to Buy scheme, with 1,376 council homes sold between January 2018 and the end of May 2026.
